The Iron lady of Asia former Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago died after battling stage 4 lung cancer on Thursday Morning, according to her husband Atty. Jan Santiago.

"She died peacefully in her sleep this morning," Santiago said.
Santiago ran in the presidential election last May with her running mate Bong Bong Marcos as his vice president.

She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2014.
The former lawmaker is known for her exemplary service as a politician and lawmaker. She is a recipient of prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service.

Among her distinction is being named as one of The 100 Most Powerful Women in the World in 1997 by The Australian Magazine.

She finished her studies in University of the Philippines, University of Michigan, Oxford University, Maryhill School of Theology, University of California, Harvard University, and Cambridge University.

Meanwhile, there is no official statement yet about the internment of Santiago.
