President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed grief on the passing of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Thursday.
"We express our deepest sorrow over the passing of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago....Rest in peace, Madam Senator. May your legacy continue to guide this nation for many years to come," Duterte said.President Duterte is currently in Hanoi, Vietnam for his official two-day visit.
"She is best remembered as a graft buster ‘eating death threats for breakfast,' earning her the Iron Lady of Asia. A constitutionalist, she has always been an advocate for the rule of law," he addedSantiago was one of the candidates in the presidential bid on 2016 polls. During the presidential debate, the then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte appeared to be friends with the former senator.
There was no heated atmosphere and even heated exchange between them. Duterte, during the debate, said that he doesn’t see Miriam passing for the next 20 years.
Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella called Santiago’s death as “passing of an era.”
"She was a shining light in Philippine political annals for her sharp legal mind uncompromising stand and acid humor. She had a profound influence on millennials and the youth, constantly challenging pre-conceived notions both political and social," he said.The lady senator was known for her fearless character. She captured the heart of young people as she was the sought person for graduation rites to address students and inspire them with her witty introduction using hugot and witty lines.
