RJ Nieto: #CocoyGate and the Mafia Code of Omerta in Mainstream Media

Francis Pangilinan.

#COCOYGATE AND THE MAFIA CODE OF OMERTA AMONG MAINSTREAM MEDIA

It has been almost 48 hours since VOVph, For the Motherland - Sass Rogando Sasot, and I broke the #CocoyGate story. It has gone viral with over 34,000 shares and 1.5 million people reached. However, not a single mainstream media news outlet has reported about it, despite Rappler overlord Maria Ressa's claims that it is the job of journalists "to report".

There are no recent news items I can find about Cocoy Dayao, even if the ThinkingPinoy expose is the first Google result under the search term "Cocoy Dayao".

Is there a some sort of Code of Omerta, a code of silence, among decision-makers in mainstream media? Are they under the payroll of whoever may be behind the anti-administration propaganda machine? Or have they simply forgotten their duty to the Filipino People because they got outscooped by those whom they have too little respect for?

Or worse, do they simply lack even the simplest of web sleuthing akills despite their years "journalistic training"?

Or are they still too busy strategizing with the opposition to find a plausible alibi for the assailed websites to protect their owners' political interests?

This is why bloggers have overtaken traditional mass media in social media: their egos love writing checks that their brains cannot cash.

What we may discover in the following days may be bigger than we all think it will be.
